Checkers Hyper, N1 City, was the first phase of N1 City Mall and launched in 1989, thereafter the full centre opened for trade on 30 October 1990. In 1995 an additional 5000sqm was added to the centre, this included the new Jet, ABSA and Ackermans as well as additional parking. As the centre had aged quite dramatically by 2005, an extensive R110 million refurbishment was undertaken.

The refurbishment project was completed by June 2006 transforming and repositioning N1 City Mall as the 4th largest shopping centre in the Western Cape. With the addition of a new food court area, the Mall now measures a total of 64,705m² with over 150 vibrant stores.

The new N1 City Mall now offers shoppers a dedicated and exciting food court including operators such as Texas Spur, Mike's Kitchen, Ocean Basket, Nando's, Steers and Wimpy. The exciting new food court offers the hungry shopper ample seating in a clean and stylish environment with the latest sporting entertainment on the big screen. Although most of the eateries are conveniently situated in the food court area, a variety of excellent coffee shops which include Mugg & Bean, Café Fino and Maxi's, are also situated throughout the Mall. In addition, the mall offers ample parking for free, leading off an upper deck and directly into the food court as well as an undercover parkade. N1 City Mall offers 2,607 free parking bays at the centre, 638 of which are under cover. The friendly car guards, who are positioned strategically around the Mall, ensure that shoppers' vehicles are well cared for whilst they shop at leisure. We have even added special Mom's and Tots parking bays situated at each entrance for the convenience of our moms with prams and little ones.
