The CAMI Speed Challenge is an initiative that was launched in 2007 with the objective of creating social awareness of the importance of numeracy skills as a fundamental basis for primary, secondary and tertiary education. In the 2010 CAMI Speed Challenge, Grade 1 to 11 learners from across the Western Cape region will compete to see who has the ability to work quickly and accurately when doing basic arithmetic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) in a 400 second computer-based speed test. In 2009 more than 67 000 Western Cape learners took part at school level. Educators and parents were amazed to see how the exposure to ICT tools rejuvenated learner’s interest in conventionally challenging subjects like Mathematics. CAMI Educational Software is being utilised to conduct the speed tests but it also covers all work for Mathematics, English, Afrikaans and School Readiness (4 to 18 years) and is available for home users. CAMI was developed in South Africa (1984) and is being used in more than 750 Western Cape Schools. Furthermore CAMI is exported to various countries: UK, Finland, United Arab Emirates, India, Singapore, China, New Zealand, Australia, Namibia and Botswana. Date: Sat, 14th Feb 2009 Western Province Blood Transfusion Service (WPBTS) will be hosting a Big Bleed on Valentine’s Day from 10am to 14:45 in the Truworths Promotion Court, N1 City Mall in Goodwood. “At a time when people’s focus is on their loved ones on Valentine’s Day, we are asking those who can, to come and give the gift of life and donate blood,” said Marika Champion, spokesperson for the WPBTS. Ten beds will be set up in the centre where spot prizes will be handed out. Tea and Valentine’s Day chocolates will be served to donors. Each donation only takes about thirty minutes which includes filling in a questionnaire, a basic health check, the actual donation and tea afterwards. Any person older than 17 years, weighing more than 50kg and who leads a healthy, safe lifestyle can donate blood. Donors must remember to eat before donating blood. The demand for blood is constant as the blood products taken from a donation only have a relatively short shelf life. Red blood cells, usually transfused to patients with anaemia and severe blood loss, last around 35 days. However, platelets used to treat cancer patients (leukaemia) have a much shorter shelf life so it is vital for donors to give blood regularly. Champion continues: “To ensure we are able to continue supplying hospitals with the blood they need to treat patients we are always looking for new donors to come forward and for regular donors to keep their appointments. Our community owes a huge debt of gratitude to our donors, without whose support we would not be able to save lives.” Donors are invited to visit the newly established permanent Blood Donor Centre at N1 City Mall. The choir achieves regularly at eisteddfods and competitions and some of their top results include being the winners of the Tygerberg International Eisteddfod contemporary section in 2005, 2006 and 2007 and the winners of the Facets competition 2005. This dance competition is open to all amateur dancers between 10 and 21 years old. There will be two categories: junior which will be open to 10 to 15 year olds and the senior category which will be open to 16 to 21 year olds. These dancers are invited to show off their dancing skills be it in the form of hip-hop, modern/freestyle, krunk, tap dancing, Latin American dancing or any other genre of dance. Participants will have the option of performing a solo act alternatively a group performance (maximum of five members). One solo winner and one group from the junior and senior categories will be selected as the winners at the Finale show on 26 October 2008 in the food court at 14h00. Guest MC, Az Abrahams, of Heart 104.9, as well as Dance Dynamics, the South African hip-hop champions, will entertain the crowds. The SmART Competition has been launched to schools countrywide and is open to all Grade R to 7 children. The purpose of this competition is to raise awareness and funds for Hospital Schools around South Africa by allowing children to enter an ART Competition. The competition’s theme is “happiness” and is judged on the child’s interpretation of the word, rather than “the best artist”. Children pay R10 to enter and are able to use any medium to create their picture, that is, paint, crayons, pencils etc. Each child that enters will receive a free National Geographic Kids magazine when exiting the area.

This is the message from the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) which invites the public to help launch its annual Cuppa for CANSA campaign at N1 City Mall in Cape Town from 09:00-15:00 on Saturday 7 June. Activities include a fashion show by models who are cancer survivors, a big screen Cuppa slideshow, and a ribbon made up of messages of hope for those affected by cancer. “CANSA encourages supporters to take part in Cuppas at their nearest Shoprite or Checkers during June or to host a Cuppa for CANSA in your home, club or workplace,” said Stephanie van Deventer, Provincial Manager of CANSA Western Cape. “Funds raised from this year’s Cuppa for CANSA campaign will go to patient care services in your region.” Hearing the words “you have cancer” is a life-changing experience. While more South Africans are surviving cancer than ever before, research has shown that the support of family and friends is crucial in the journey to recovery. Often we don’t know what to do or say especially to the ones we love most. That is why CANSA, in association with the Shoprite Checkers supermarket group, has produced a leaflet with advice on how to be a friend to a cancer survivor through what we say and do. Fri, 14th Dec 2007 - Sun, 16th Dec 2007 The annual Tygerberg Bonsai Show will once again be held at the Checkers Hyper Court from 14 - 16 December. Forty of the Tygerberg Bonsai Club's best bonsais will be on show and a competition will be hosted among them to see who will win the title of "Best Bonsai". There will be other bonsais at the show for the public to purchase and the members of the club will be on hand to answer any questions regarding bonsais.

What better way to start the festive Season than to hear the chimes of Christmas bells and the voices of children singing Christmas carols. VDM Promotions in association with N1 City Mall will host Carols by Candlelight on the 17th of November 2007 at 18:00 in our Food Court. Join Natalie Becker from Good Hope FM as she enjoys Christmas favourites performed by Settlers High School and VDM Promotions and sing in the festive spirit at Carols at the City. Settlers High School will perform a half hour of Christmas music together with a Sing-along and Performances by VDM Promotions to put you in the real Christmas mood. The Settlers High School choir is a large contemporary group, giving as many learners as possible the opportunity to perform. The choir achieves regularly at Eisteddfods and competitions and of the top results includes: winners of Tygerberg International Eisteddfod contemporary section in 2005, 2006 and 2007; winners of Facets competition 2005; winners of Tygervalley Christmas Festival 2005 and winners of V&A Waterfront Clash of Concerto in 2006 and runner-up in 2007. The choir consists of approximately 175 members each year and is accompanied by a band of music students at the school. All arrangements are written and conducted by Hugo Smuts, the choirmaster and music teacher at the school. Date: Sat, 17th Nov 2007 The Parmalat ‘Beat the Break Skipathon’ at N1 City Mall (November 17, 2007) Building strong bones in childhood through exercise is one way to improve bone mass and help maintain stronger bones in later life. ‘Bone Awareness Month’ will see the launch of the first Parmalat ‘Beat the Break Skipathon’, which will run from 11h30 till 13h00. This initiative, aimed at children in Grades 1-5, will become an annual event and will provide an entertaining way for children to learn about the importance of calcium intake. Learners, their parents and their siblings are all invited to participate in the Beat the Break Skipathon, which will take place at the Food Court in N1 City Mall, Cape Town, which will run from 11h30 till 13h00. The Parmalat Beat the Break Skipathon Day will be jam-packed with activities and prizes. Celebrities will take a turn with the skipping ropes, to see how they feature against 7 to 12-year-olds, and children will have the fun of skipping in time to 'milk-drinking' skipping chants. In each age category, the team that clocks up the highest number of skips over a period of 60 minutes will win a cash prize and selected Parmalat dairy products to be supplied to their grade for a period of a year. Patricia Lewis, Sony BMG and SABC 2 in conjunction with Shoprite and Checkers and Carnival City are proud to announce that Supersterre 2, the popular national singing competition, is back for 2007. The total prize package is worth R2.5 million including the ultimate prize, a recording contract from Sony BMG to the value of R500 000. If you think that you have what it takes to enter Supersterre, the entry forms are available in the Supersterre CDs 1 and 2, available at selected Shoprite, Checkers or Checkers Hyper stores or any other good CD store. Not only are there loads of great give-aways on the cards, but also a bundle of fun kiddies activities at our Kiddies Cave of Wonder. Situated at the Truworths B court, behind the lifts at the information kiosk, Kiddies Cave of Wonder will be running from 30 June to 13 July, every day between 09:00 and 17:00. Our fun-filled days kick off with Magical Movies at 09:00 followed by daily face painting between 10:00 and 13:00. The rest of the day’s entertainment will vary between clown comedy acts, story time, puppet magic, crafty kids, fun & games, balloon twisting and cave of wonders (kiddies theatre). There will be 7 Crafty Kids creative workshops during our holiday programme scheduled for various times. These workshops can accommodate 20 children, between the ages of 5 and 13, per session. During these sessions, children will learn how to make fun things like beautiful wings and musical instrument. Kids can also look forward to learning how to decorate biscuits, create beautiful art pieces and have fun recycling. During the fun and game sessions, our game presenter will keep the young minds entertained with an exciting treasure hunt and colouring in competition, to name but a few. Our clown comedy act will even keep the older at heart entertained with hilarious magic, juggling and balloon twisting.
